Batman in Batcave
Batman in Batcave most likely holds the record for the most time I've invested in creating a full composition: subject and background. I am famous (with an audience of one) for not taking the time to surround my subjects. For example, I typically draw Batman standing in front of a white void. It just takes too long to make anything behind the primary prop (lazy)! Yet I am always pleased at the results when I actually take the time to fill the space. The height of the talent and prolificacy of my high school years shines in this image - during a time when I sought to master gradation and shadow.
In this drawing I formed rough shapes and added several light sources. I imagined how the light would wrap around the outlined shapes in 3D space and drew shadows and such. Though the forms are not flawless, I enjoyed creating the illusion of depth and filling in the details.
"Beyond him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth Zur, made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Heroes." -Nehemiah 3:16
Perhaps Batman should have named his sanctum sanctorum "the House of Heroes." But then he'd have to get a roommate to complete the plural. Maybe that's exactly what he needs. Oh, wait: there's Robin! Ew, Robin.
